Abstract

Shakira's 'BZRP Music Sessions #53' is examined as a cultural and feminist intervention, challenging traditional gendered expectations of female self-expression and motherhood. The chapter delves into the song's reception, highlighting how it disrupts the archetype of the suffering mother and asserts a new narrative of female agency. It also explores the broader implications of Shakira's actions within the context of celebrity culture and the music industry. The text concludes that while Shakira's song is a powerful act of self-mythologisation, it remains subject to the broader cultural forces that regulate and constrain women's narratives. The chapter also discusses the concept of 'feministencia' and how Shakira's defiance disrupts the patriarchal primer of obedience. The analysis underscores the complexities of public storytelling by women in positions of hyper-visibility and the ongoing struggle for narrative control.
