Abstract

This chapter delves into the reasons behind the Japan Innovation Party's (Ishin) significant decline in the 2024 House of Representatives election, despite its strong performance in previous elections. The analysis focuses on the party's inconsistent decision-making, particularly during the amendment of the Political Funds Control Act, and its impact on voter support. The study uses empirical data from two online surveys to examine the relationship between evaluations of the party's leader, Baba Nobuyuki, and support for Ishin. It also investigates the connection between the party's competence reputation and changes in voting behavior. The findings suggest that the decline in evaluations of Ishin's party competence was likely the primary cause of its defeat in the 2024 election. The chapter also discusses the implications of these findings for the future of Ishin and suggests areas for further research.
