Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical issue of wind-induced interference effects on tall chimneys, particularly focusing on a 125 m RC chimney in a typical power plant setting. The study meticulously examines the dynamic response of the chimney to wind loads, considering the complex fluid-structure interactions caused by surrounding structures such as other chimneys, cooling towers, and buildings. Wind tunnel experiments were conducted to simulate these interactions, revealing significant variations in the chimney's response due to different wind incidence angles and configurations. The results highlight the importance of accounting for interference effects in the design of tall chimneys, as they can lead to increased wind loads and altered dynamic behavior. The chapter also discusses the implications of these findings for the design and safety of similar structures in the future.
