Abstract

Biofouling, the accumulation of microorganisms and macro-organisms on submerged surfaces, poses significant challenges to the performance of wooden fishing vessels. This chapter delves into the types of biofouling, including microfouling and macrofouling, and their detrimental effects on ship resistance, speed, and maneuverability. The growth of biofouling, particularly barnacles, is meticulously documented, showing a rapid increase in colonization over a six-month period. The chapter presents a detailed analysis of ship resistance, using both empirical and numerical methods to calculate the total resistance and its components. The impact of biofouling on the hydrostatic and stability characteristics of the vessel is also explored, with a focus on how biofouling affects the ship's operational costs and compliance with IMO stability criteria. The findings highlight the necessity for comprehensive solutions to protect marine objects from biofouling, making this chapter an essential read for those seeking to understand and address the complexities of biofouling in marine environments.
