Abstract

This scoping review delves into the impact of external work interruptions in digital information work, focusing on their frequency, types, temporal aspects, similarity and complexity, and other characteristics. The review reveals that increased interruption frequency correlates with negative outcomes such as decreased task performance, impaired memory, lower job satisfaction, and increased stress. Different types and formats of interruptions, like emails and instant messages, have varying effects on performance and well-being. The timing and duration of interruptions also play a significant role in their disruptive potential. The review emphasizes the need for further research on positive effects of interruptions and the importance of distinguishing between objective and subjective interruption frequency. It concludes that understanding these characteristics is crucial for designing work environments that support long-term health and productivity.
