Abstract

The article 'You are Not Qualified—Leave it to us': Obstetric Violence as Testimonial Injustice' delves into the systematic dismissal of birthing women's knowledge during labor, framing this as a form of epistemic injustice. It explores how women's embodied certainty is frequently disregarded by medical staff, leading to obstetric violence. The author draws on feminist epistemological theories and real-life examples to illustrate how this injustice is rooted in societal prejudices against women's epistemic capacities. The text also highlights the role of racism in exacerbating these injustices, particularly for nonwhite women. Through the lens of Fricker’s concepts of testimonial injustice, the article argues that the credibility deficit experienced by laboring women is a moral evil that needs to be recognized and addressed to prevent traumatic birth experiences.
