Zusammenfassung

Die Analyse zivil-militärischer Beziehungen als Teilgebiet der Vergleichenden Politikwissenschaft beschäftigt sich mit einem zentralen Ordnungsproblem moderner Gesellschaften. Im Zentrum steht die doppelte Herausforderung der Institutionalisierung politischer Kontrolle über das Militär und der Gewährleistung effektiver Sicherheit für den Nationalstaat und seine Bürger. Forschungsschwerpunkte sind die vorwiegend mit qualitativen Methoden des Vergleichs betriebene Analyse des Verhältnisses von Militär und Politik in demokratischen Transformationsprozessen, die makro-quantitativ vergleichende Coup-Ursachen-Forschung sowie die Methoden und Theorien kombinierende Analyse der politisch-militärischen Beziehungen in Diktaturen. Ein noch neues, vielversprechendes Forschungsgebiet ist die Untersuchung der Auswirkungen zivil-militärischer Beziehungen auf die politische Performanz von Demokratien und Diktaturen.
