Abstract

Floods remain one of the most destructive natural hazards, affecting millions of lives annually and posing significant challenges to sustainable development. This chapter examines the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and morphometric analysis to assess and manage flood risks within catchment areas. By integrating advanced GIS techniques with statistical methods, the research provides a detailed framework for prioritizing sub-basins based on their flood risk potential. The study focuses on the Gavkoshak watershed, a region with a complex geomorphological profile, to demonstrate the practical application of these methods. Key findings include the identification of high-risk sub-basins and the development of a flood risk zoning map, which can be instrumental in planning and implementing effective flood mitigation strategies. The chapter also highlights the importance of morphometric parameters in understanding the hydrological behavior of watersheds, offering insights into how these parameters can be used to enhance flood risk management. The research underscores the need for comprehensive and data-driven approaches to address the growing threat of floods, providing a valuable resource for professionals and researchers in the field of water management and environmental sustainability.
