The fundamental concept of availability and available energy as dealt with in the last chapter leads to an even more important concept — that of energy grading and degrading, which is the subject of this final chapter. Indeed, there is much discussion today of energy needs and available resources, but no precise measure of the loss of utility associated with energy conversion processes has evolved to date. This book bridges this gap by rigorously defining the loss of availability at each stage of energy conversion in terms of a newly defined energy degrading concept.
