Abstract

The relationship between energy consumption structure, economic structure and energy intensity in a country is now arising as a current discussion. Most of the world has agreed with the common strategies to increase energy efficiency for a sustainable economy with more savings. Besides, the increasing share of energy efficiency to countries’ economies at different levels has already changed this perspective to more efficient energy technology implementations.
This study evaluates the impacts of energy consumption on the environmental benefits of the selected ten countries for the last 17 years. A holistic methodology, data envelopment analysis (DEA), is used to evaluate the efficient frontier of selected countries by using the indicators such as “total primary energy consumption” as input parameter and “total carbon dioxide emissions” and “energy intensity” as output parameters. It is observed that Turkey shows a low profile, in terms of the analysis results, namely, huge energy efficiency potential, which can be evaluated as the country has a way ahead to cut its energy consumption, but with its relatively low levels of CO2 emissions and total primary energy consumption per dollar of its GDP when compared with the other countries in the scope.
