BMW Diesel Engine to Get Borg Warner’s Quad-Turbo

Autor:

Borg Warner’s two-stage, regulated quad-turbocharging system for cars is the first of its kind. The six-cylinder diesel engine fitted with this system has been installed in two BMW models.

Under the bonnet, both the BMW M550d Xdrive and the 750d Xdrive feature the Twin Power Turbo with two turbochargers for the low-pressure stage and the high-pressure stage, respectively. The turbochargers are designed to ensure a smooth performance over the entire speed range and to reduce fuel consumption by up to four percent. The 3.0-litre inline diesel engine achieves a power output of 294 kW (400 hp) and a maximum torque of 760 newton metres with BorgWarner’s new R2S system.

For rapid acceleration without a noticeable turbo lag, the high-pressure turbocharger is designed to rapidly develop boost pressure in the lower engine speed range. The second turbocharger is switched on only at higher flow rates. For the low-pressure stage, two small, lightweight turbochargers ensure a faster response. "Borg Warner’s latest and most sophisticated R2S system features four turbochargers to take boosting to a whole new level and help our customer achieve the highest demands for power and efficiency for an exciting driving experience", says Frédéric Lissalde, President & General Manager, Borg Warner Turbo Systems.
