Zusammenfassung

Während der Individualentwicklung beginnen frisch geschlüpfte oder neugeborene Jungtiere mit ihrer Umwelt zu interagieren, aber ihre Entwicklung ist nicht auf die frühe postnatale Phase beschränkt. Fitness-relevante Verhaltensweisen sollten weitestgehend abrufbereit vorliegen, also einer genetischen Kontrolle unterliegen. Andere Verhaltensweisen sind artspezifisch, treten nur bei einem Geschlecht oder nur bei bestimmten Individuen auf, was ebenfalls auf genetische Einflüsse hindeutet. Epigenetische Modifikationen des Erbguts beeinflussen ebenfalls das Verhalten der Nachkommen. Hormone spielen eine zentrale Rolle bei der Entwicklung und Integration eines Organismus, aber auch bei akuten Verhaltensanpassungen. Mit zunehmendem Alter kommt es zudem zu Anpassung des Verhaltens durch sozioökologische Einflüsse, individuelles und soziales Lernen sowie Seneszenz. Die Entwicklung des Verhaltens kann daher nur als permanentes Zusammenspiel von internen und externen Faktoren verstanden werden.
