Abstract

Chapter 1 explained how voltage support requires reactive power control. In this chapter, we describe in detail the main equipment in power systems that are able to deliver or absorb the reactive power through particular aspects of control as they relate to voltage and reactive power.

The exception with respect to the above considered case of low active power is the use of voltage source converters connected in “back-to-back configuration” between two AC bus bars, which enables active power transfer between two AC grids (synchronous or asynchronous or even with different frequencies) by modulating the two voltage phasor angles, simultaneously providing reactive power support to the AC networks.
