Industry 4.0 implies a future digitalized and interconnected industrial value creation and has the potential to transform buyer-supplier relationships. Despite its importance, there is still little research about Industry 4.0 from a supply chain management perspective. Addressing this research gap, the paper sheds light on expected buyer-supplier relationships in the context of Industry 4.0 and analyzes industry differences. Qualitative semi-structured interviews with 65 experts from German and Austrian industrial enterprises of several industrial sectors serve as an empirical basis. The results reveal how expected buyer-supplier relationships in various industries differ in comparison to the present situation. In the future, value creation processes will continue to get digitized and automatized covering all industry sectors. Digital platforms will come into play, transforming future value creation, for instance in the automotive suppliers and electronic & electrical engineering industries. Inter alia, drivers and causes for the trans-formations include that companies strive to optimize and streamline cross-company value creation and improve their competitiveness. The paper contributes to the current state of research about buyer-supplier relationships in the context of Industry 4.0 from a management perspective and indicates various areas for further research.
