Abstract

Recently, there has been an increased interest in the opportunities of virtual reality (VR) for the enhancement of the tourism experience. However, few studies have qualitatively explored the experience from elderly tourists perspective. Latest technology needs to be relevant and easy to use for elderly users in order to be accepted. Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of VR on elderly tourists’ experience. In order to achieve the aim, the present study conducted 23 interviews with elderly tourists at a cultural heritage tourism attraction in the UK. Interviews were analysed using thematic analysis and findings revealed impacts of VR onto elderly visitors’ experience as well as requirements with regards to VR applications within cultural heritage sites. There has been an overall positive attitude towards the use of VR among elderly visitors and strong intentions to return as a result of experiencing VR.
