Tensile cracks commonly exist in rock engineering after drilling or blasting, e.g., on the upper surface of a failed slope, the circumference of a borehole, or in the tunnel with internal pressure (Goodman 1989). Since the tensile strength of rock is much smaller than the compressive or shear strength, tensile cracks often develop before compressive or shear failure. It is significant for rock engineering to investigate the tensile behavior of rock. …
