Abstract

The melting of Arctic ice caps in recent decades has added to the complexity of competition in the region, as it opens the door for the involvement of extra-regional players, such as China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and the European Union. China is strengthening its influence in the Arctic by enhancing its bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the region. The participation of China and other new players in discussions on Arctic affairs is changing the balance of power in the region.
