It is well known that the asymmetry of membrane structure is closely related to its functions. If the membrane is asymmetric with respect to a partition coefficient, the ion concentration gradient within the membrane will be different from that expected from the bulk concentration ratio. When the concentration gradient within the membrane is larger than that within a symmetric membrane, the facilitated transport will take place in a passive transport. When the direction of concentration gradient within the asymmetric membrane is opposite to that expected from the bulk concentration ratio, the reverse transport will take place.
