This trend is set to continue with further growth of ‘information superhighways’ and the increased deployment of fibre closer to the office and home in the local area network. These developments have been fuelled by the inherent capacity of fibre optic systems to carry a huge information volume as well as the significant advances since the early 1970s in fibre optics, components and laser technology.
