Abstract

This chapter uses theoretical considerations and insights from expert interviews to analyze four different aspects of FinTech business models. First, we analyze the FinTechs’ cooperation with banks and find that both sides can usually profit from cooperation, while in practice cooperation also can fail. In a second step, we investigate the use of big data by FinTechs. In particular, we describe some known use cases of big data in FinTechs. We find that, while the potential for big data in the financial industry is large, the use by FinTechs is not that frequent today. We also discuss legal and economic limitations of big data applications. Third, this chapter provides an analysis of the sustainability of FinTech business models. Fourth, we analyze FinTechs that specialize in the provision or brokerage of debt and loan substitutes.

For example, consider a fictitious graphic designer who, to obtain interesting orders, needs a high-quality computer for 5000 euros. He does not have the financial means to purchase the computer outright, so he needs a loan. Already with the first order, he can earn 6000 euros contribution margin within half a year. If he now pays 10% interest p.a., he will incur a cost of 250 euros, whereas at an interest rate of 6%, he would only pay 150 euros. The additional cost of 100 euros is hardly significant for him because it is almost negligible in relation to the return on the purchase. Given the alternative of not securing the loan from a traditional bank, he thus could even afford significantly higher interest rates.
