The Formation Micro Scanner (FMS)* significantly increased our ability to resolve fractures in the borehole wall on its introduction in 1985 (Lloyd et al 1986) and has been favourably compared (Pearson and Batchelor 1986) with the BHTV* in terms of the number and accuracy of the borehole events it can detect. The applications of multipass logging and interactive dip computation from the images has, by increasing borehole wall coverage and allowing fast and accurate fracture orientation determination, further enhanced the ability to investigate jointing and fracture surfaces in the periphery of the wellbore.
