Masses of raw data are difficult to comprehend, unless carefully organised and presented. Consider, for instance, the data shown in Table 5.1. Seventy five towns and villages containing 10 or more persons were selected at random from amongst 1318 shown on a map of Iowa published by Rand McNally. The straight-line distances separating the towns and villages from their nearest neighbours were measured in the sequence listed.
