Abstract

Today, even more than forty years ago when I originally wrote this essay, Quaker families are faced with the problem of maintaining the cherished tradition of the home as a center for social, religious, and some economic activities—in a world that has snatched most of these experiences away from the home. We see many of “the world’s” families around us suffering acutely from these losses of function, and we may well ask ourselves, “What kind of family life can we build?” The poet answers, “One small plot of heaven.”
