Abstract

Based on 2022 data from the China Rural Revitalization Survey, we examined the impact of Agro-product Geographical Indications (AGIs) on the subjective well-being of rural residents. The results show that AGIs significantly enhance the subjective well-being of rural residents. This conclusion holds even when employing the exposure frequency of a village in Chinese newspapers regarding agriculture as an instrumental variable for whether this village has an AGI. The propensity score matching test indicates that the subjective well-being of rural residents in villages with AGIs is on average 0.402 higher compared to villages without AGIs, which corresponds to 5.08% of the latter’s average. The underlying mechanism for this impact is that AGIs contribute to elevating household income levels and improving the ecological environment and basic public services within villages. Furthermore, the effects of AGIs are more pronounced among those engaged in agricultural employment and in villages with high governance capacities. These findings imply that governments might enhance the subjective well-being of rural residents by protecting and promoting local agricultural products.

The rationale for selecting Chinese Agro-product Geographical Indications as a representative case is twofold. Firstly, the primary adoption of Agro-product Geographical Indications has been in developed countries, such as the Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) within the European Union and the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) system in France. In contrast, developing countries have engaged less in this practice, though they hold considerable untapped potential (Richards, 2020; Török et al., 2020). Secondly, as detailed below, China has specifically established Agro-product Geographical Indications rather than general Geographical Indications, reflecting a particular emphasis on unlocking the value of agricultural products.

It is necessary to explain the instances where some variables in Table 1 have a minimum value of 0. Some suburban villages have become part of the urban fringe due to city expansion, resulting in their distance to the city being 0; land is allocated based on household registration attributes, hence the land area for residents who moved into the village after land reform is 0; residents who are in the process of job searching or are unemployed, as well as those whose businesses have closed, may have an income of 0, especially in the context of COVID-19.
