Yu and Kwan use Berger’s and Luckmann’s social construction of reality theory to examine how China’s nation-building narrative formulates the social construction of national identity. The authors leverage this theoretical framework to examine People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) relations with Taiwan, Tibet and Hong Kong. This theory focuses on how knowledge forms and how it is preserved and altered within a society. The foundation of this theory begins with Max Weber’s ([1947] 1964) subjective interpretation of human behavior. According to Weber, research could yield better results if researchers know how to relate to their subject of study personally. Alfred Schutz (1932) strengthened Weber’s argument by stating that understanding the lives of the ordinary people is the major objective of social science research. Berger and Luckmann (1996) use Weber’s and Schutz’s approach to develop the social construction of reality theory. This theory states that the interaction between humans and their environment produces different meanings and therefore this reality is socially constructed. Based on this framework, Yu and Kwan created social construction of national reality theory, contending that a nation is formed based on the shared cultural heritage and the national identity. However, changing reality will transform this collective consciousness over time through a process of making sense of conflicting knowledge, which is resolved through interaction and learning. …
