Abstract

By using radiation chemical methods, such as γ-ray radiolysis and pulse radiolysis, powerful oxidative and reductive reagents, which are not available with other methods, can be generated to promote various reactions. The reaction pathways caused by these oxidative and reductive reagents can be followed by various spectroscopic methods, such as transient absorption and EPR. Therefore, radiation chemical methods are applicable to various systems in a wide variety of fields. For example, our research group has studied the mechanisms of various phenomena by means of radiation chemical methods. In the present chapter, fundamental reaction mechanisms of radiation chemistry are introduced in the initial part. Additionally, our radiation chemical investigations on charge delocalization process, radical ions in the excited state, photocatalytic systems, emitting device, and biological systems are introduced as examples of wide applicability of radiation chemical methods.
