Reflecting on his 25 years of experience in the premium automotive industry in China, the author provides a snapshot of the gaps and development potential of employees in the industry. Skill gaps found among local Chinese employees are identified and categorized into the following four categories: company culture; proficiency in English as a business language; effective communication skills; and strategic thinking and planning skills. The author suggests key areas of focus for the closing of these gaps and the addressing of critical skill shortages including the prioritization of development, a focus on retention, collaboration with education institutions and strategic recruitment.
