Exposure to airborne fine particles has been associated with increased morbidity [1] and mortality [2]. In the EU, fine dust is defined as airborne respirable particles with aerodynamic diameters below 10 μm (defined via a pre-separator that has an efficiency of 50% for 10 μm particles). Fine dust is therefore also termed PM10 (particulate matter < 10 μm). PM10 sources can be of both natural or anthropogenic origin.
