Abstract

Cellulosic textiles can now be durably functionalized to make them antimicrobial, UV-protective, self-cleaning, flame retardant, stain/water repellent, air-permeable, hydrophobic, electrically conductive, photo-luminescent and pollutant-removing, while retaining comfort. These traits can be achieved by new methodologies with various functionalizing agents based on metal salts. Metal oxides, metal nanoparticles, and metal–organic frameworks that are derived from metal salts, are all agents that are employed for imparting such specific functions to cellulosic textiles. Generally, these agents can be applied by either ex situ or in situ techniques. Use of cross-linkers and/or activators on the textiles before functionalization is crucial to increase the durability of the acquired functions.
