The latest gravimetric geoid of Japan, JGEOID98 was evaluated, focussed on the longwavelength distortion: The network adjustment applied to the ship gravity data was considered to yield the distortion in the gravity field.A recent global marine gravity model from altimetry data, KMS98 was assessed over Japan, demonstrating significant improvement in long wavelength. A preliminary test to use KMS98 for correcting JGEOID98 was made with a simple filtering approach and the results show substantial improvement in fixing the long-wavelength errors. The distortion in JGEOID98 was estimated to be on the order of! 10 mgal.KMS98 worsened the geoid in short wavelength, having some problematic areas near the coasts. We need to develop an optimal way to incorporate altimeter data in the geoid determination over Japan.
