Social scientists today can access an abundance of data be it survey data, official statistics, or increasingly also data collected with new technologies. This trend is further amplified by the popularity of open science and FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) data principles (Link et al. 2017). Furthermore, advances in archival practices and technologies make accessing data easier than ever. It is no wonder then that more and more research in the social sciences makes the most of this wealth of data by combining data from different sources (Dubrow and Tomescu-Dubrow 2016; Hussong et al. 2013).
