Hyundai Building Hydrogen Infrastructure for Fuel Cell Trucks

In 2020, the first Hyundai H2 Xcient fuel cell trucks will be delivered to Switzerland. A hydrogen ecosystem and the necessary infrastructure will also be constructed.

The Hyundai H2 Xcient fuel cell electric truck features a 190 kW (258 HP) hydrogen fuel cell system with two 95 kW fuel cell stacks connected in parallel. Seven hydrogen tanks with a tank capacity of 35 kgH2 allow for a driving range of over 400 km. The first 50 fuel cell trucks will be delivered to Switzerland in 2020, and by 2025, there will be a total of 1,600 trucks.

In order to secure both production and the hydrogen supply, Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility, a joint venture of the Hyundai Motor Company and Swiss hydrogen expert H2 Energy, has entered into a strategic partnership with Hydrospider. From the end of 2019, Hydrospider, a joint venture of H2 Energy, the Swiss energy provider Alpiq and the Linde Group, will be producing hydrogen in a new 20 MW electrolysis plant. The electricity will be provided by Alpiq from the run-of-river power plant in Gösge.

"Through this partnership between Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility and Hydrospider, Hyundai Motor will offer its fuel cell electric trucks in a specially designed ecosystem" says In Cheol Lee, Executive Vice President and Manager of Hyundai Motor's Commercial Vehicle Division. In addition, a joint project involving petrol station owners and partners from logistics and trade will establish a hydrogen ecosystem throughout Europe.
