This book describes the most frequently used high-speed serial buses in embedded systems, especially those used by FPGAs. These buses employ SerDes, JESD204, SRIO, PCIE, Aurora and SATA protocols for chip-to-chip and board-to-board communication, and CPCIE, VPX, FC and Infiniband protocols for inter-chassis communication. For each type, the book provides the bus history and version info, while also assessing its advantages and limitations. Furthermore, it offers a detailed guide to implementing these buses in FPGA design, from the physical layer and link synchronization to the frame format and application command. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable resource for researchers, R&D engineers and graduate students in computer science or electronics who wish to learn the protocol principles, structures and applications of high-speed serial buses.

Chapter 2. High-Speed Data Transfer Based on SERDES

Abstract
SERDES (Serialization/De-serialization) transfer mechanism, namely a serializer at the transmitter for serializing the parallel data into a serial bit stream and a de-serializer at the receiver for recovering the bit stream back to the original parallel data. The parallel-to-serial and serial-to-parallel functions were mainly implemented by specific ASICs first with DS92LV16 (National semiconductor; DS92LV16 16-bit bus LVDS serializer/deserializer—25–80 MHz, [1]) and DS90CR287 (National semiconductor; DS90CR287/DS90CR288A +3.3 V rising edge data strobe LVDS 28-bit channel link-85 MHZ, [2]) as examples. With these chips, a communication from Chip To Chip, Board To Board and Chassis To Chassis is established.

Chapter 5. Transmission Technology Based on Aurora Protocol

Abstract
Aurora bus protocol was first put forward by Xilinx Company in 2002. It is a scalable, lightweight, link-layer point-to-point serial communication protocol that can be used for high-speed data transmission between FPGAs [1]. Different than the SRIO and PCIE with fixed transmission rate, Aurora transmission rate is flexible. Take Virtex-7 series of FPGA for example, the transmission rate supported now is 0.5–13.1 Gbps, but can be increased with development of FPGA and embedded high-speed serial transmitter and receiver. Channel bonding also supported, to realize higher data transmission rate.

Chapter 6. High Speed Data Storage Technology Based on SATA

Abstract
Data storage technology is widely used in various fields such as safety monitoring system, automobile data recorder, bank database in civil application, and SAR radar, shooting range measurement, etc. in military application. Essentially, the high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft is an aerial camera with large capacity and high-speed storage capability; while the recovery of recoverable satellite is also to retrieve a variety of sensor parameters stored therein. Therefore it can be seen that data storage technology affects various aspects of national life.

Chapter 7. Compact PCI Express

Abstract
In the 1980s, the ISA (also including EISA) bus series inevitably became the bottleneck of the whole computer. The conflict between the faster CPU and unbearable slower peripherals prevented the efficient data interaction. Intel decided not to support the ISA any longer, but to develop a new type of bus architecture in order to serve in the next 5–10 years.
