Üsdiken takes a historical perspective and describes first the way higher education in business has developed in Turkey from its origins in the late nineteenth century to the 1980s, focusing in particular on the foreign influences that have been at play. The chapter then examines the changes in the post-1980 era, marked by a radical overhaul in the legislation governing higher education. Most notable among these changes have been the rise of not-for-profit private universities and diversification in degrees and program offerings. Üsdiken concludes by pointing to fast growth intertwined with expansion in higher education at large, the rift generated by universities patterned after US models and the still limited stature of the local MBA relative to an undergraduate business or engineering degree from a prominent university.
