The 1.6 CRDi engine in the Hyundai Tucson will be combined with a 48-volt mild hybrid drive. This means that the small diesel engine in the Korean SUV will also be available in an electrified version.

After hybridising the 2.0-litre common rail diesel engine in its Tucson SUV with a 48-volt starter generator back in 2018 already, Hyundai has now done the same for its smaller diesel model. The new mild hybrid variant of the 1.6 CRDi will be launched on the market in summer 2019.

The 100 kilowatt (136 hp) diesel will then be electrified via a 48-volt battery, a mild hybrid belt starter generator and a DC/DC converter, which connects the 12-volt on-board power system with the 48-volt system. The electric starter generator is connected to the crankshaft of the diesel engine via a belt and provides a boost of up to 12 kW and an additional torque of 55 newton metres at full throttle. The generator supports the engine under moderate strain and uses the energy from the 0.44 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery stowed under the boot floor.

Up to 12 kW charging power via recuperation

Energy is recovered via the starter generator when driving downhill, coasting and braking. At constant speed, the system decouples the starter generator from the drivetrain so it is either idling or charging the battery with a maximum charging capacity of 10 to 12 kW.

The start/stop feature is activated at 30 km/h, switching the diesel engine off earlier, as when approaching a red traffic light, for example. The system automatically controls all charging and drive modes. According to the Korean manufacturer, fuel consumption and emissions can be reduced by up to seven percent, based on the WLTP.
