AVL, together with its partners, has developed a hydrogen hybrid vehicle. The demonstration vehicle was developed primarily with a view to energy efficiency and cost saving.

As part of the "Keytech4EV" project, AVL, together with partners such as the Technical University of Vienna and Magna, developed a hybrid fuel cell battery drive for a demonstration vehicle. By taking advantage of potential synergies, the hybridised overall system should bring multiple benefits including optimised drive efficiency and reduced development costs. The concept also offers a longer range and short refuelling times.

The demonstration vehicle is based on the VW Passat GTE and, according to the project partners, provides an energy efficiency which corresponds to a fuel consumption of 2.5 litres of petrol per 100 kilometres. The range of the locally emission-free mid-size car is over 500 kilometres. The project also focused on reducing power train costs. In addition to drive system developer AVL, component and subsystem manufacturers such as Hörbiger, Magna and Elring-Klinger, research institutes like HyCentA and the Technical Universities of Graz and Vienna, and the small company IESTA were also involved in the project.
