This book, we are told, grew out of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union. Ian Morris decided that it would be instructive to look for the seeds of the decision in the UK’s history. The time frame, though, would not be decades or even centuries; it would be millennia—from the time the first settlers arrived. His argument was that this deep history was important because of the marks which it has left, marks which are not always apparent to a current generation. This posed the question as to how to do this without producing a multi-volume work and he decided that looking at the issue from a geographical perspective would meet the need. …
