A common approach to assess the implementation of techniques, concepts or software is the use of a maturity model. Maturity models separate the implementation process in the field of interest into different stages and grade the implementation in one of the defined stages. Since the first introduction of supply chain management; companies have been confronted with rising requirements of managing their supply chains. The objective of this paper is to structure the design elements of maturity models in the field of supply chain management and provide the reader with a purpose-driven, design-based catalog for efficient maturity model development. Therefore a characterization of supply chain management maturity models based on their design elements is developed. These elements then serve as a classification catalog to review existing supply chain management maturity models. Subsequently, quality attributes of supply chain management maturity models are derived from the analysis of existing models and their shortcomings. Finally, a purpose-driven catalog specifying the building blocks of supply chain management maturity models based on these quality attributes is presented. This catalog serves as a guideline for a more efficient construction of supply chain management maturity models.
