We present the inverted quadtree (IQ) data structure and a spatial reasoning (or knowledge) techniques to retrieve images or parts of images. We consider that the retrieval problem is of two types. The first one lies with the search of images that contain certain (or specific) pattern looked for by the user and that was not defined previously when the image was inserted. The second one supports spatial reasoning and it is based on an object-oriented method of knowledge representation. We show how this kind of sighting enhances the flexibility of the data representation and provides the capability of manipulating a large amount of semantic information.
