Zusammenfassung

Unter dem Stichwort Industrie 4.0 wird seit geraumer Zeit die Vision einer sich anbahnenden vierten industriellen Revolution beschrieben – um nicht zu sagen ausgerufen. Kern dieser Vision stellt nach den vorangegangenen Revolutionen Mechanisierung, Automatisierung und Digitalisierung nun die Vernetzung von industrieller Infrastruktur und allen an der Wertschöpfung beteiligten Akteuren dar.

In etwa zeitgleich wurde in den USA mit dem Schlagwort „Industrial Internet“ eine ähnliche Initiative begonnen.

Insbesondere das eher historisch oder sozialwissenschaftlich ausgerichtete Schrifttum versteht unter der Industriellen Revolution den tief greifenden und dauerhaften Umbruch der wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Verhältnisse im ausgehenden 18. und dann vor allem im 19. Jahrhundert. Als zweite industrielle Revolution beschreibt die Wirtschaftsgeschichte die Phase Hochindustrialisierung im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert, während als dritte industrielle Revolution zumeist die Phase zunehmender Digitalisierung und Ausbreitung der Computertechnik genannt wird, die als noch nicht abgeschlossen gilt. Vgl. Clark (2007), Pierenkemper (1996) und insbesondere Rifkin (2011, 2014). Demnach fiele die derzeit diskutierte Vision „Industrie 4.0“ noch unter die dritte industrielle Revolution. Einer anderen Einteilung folgen Teile der Volkswirtschaftslehre unter Rückgriff auf sog. Kondratieff-Zyklen, die eine Theorie innovationsinduzierter Wachstumszyklen propagieren und deren Zahl auf derzeit etwa fünf geschätzt wird. Vgl. z. B. Korotayev und Tsirel (2010).

Angesichts des Aufkommens der Internettechnologie wäre in Anlehnung an Zuboff zu ergänzen: Alles, was zur Vernetzung eingesetzt werden kann, wird zur Vernetzung eingesetzt; womit bereits dem umfassenden Ausdruck vom „Internet of Things“ oder allumfassend, dem „Internet of Everything“ der Boden bereitet wäre.

Im übrigen ist die direkte Einbindung von Kunden und Geschäftspartnern in Wertschöpfungsprozesse nicht nur auf Innovationen beschränkt, sondern im Kontext des Supply Chain Management bereits seit längerem Gegenstand zunehmend arbeitsteiliger Wertschöpfungsketten.

So wird beispielsweise im Rahmen der Einführung von integrierten Softwaresystemen für die Produktionsplanung und -steuerung (PPS) und dem Product-Lifecycle-Management (PLM) eine vertikale Integration realisiert, die dann mittels Supply Chain Management zu einer horizontalen Vernetzung mit Kunden und Lieferanten über Unternehmensgrenzen hinweg erweitert werden kann.
