Influence of Fuel Filterability, Performance, and Emission Characteristics of Dual Biodiesel Mixture with Diesel Blends in Compression Ignition Engine

Abstract

In this study, Prosopis juliflora biodiesel mixed with kapok (Ceiba pentandra) biodiesel was prepared by various proportions. Based on the physicochemical properties, formation of a renewed biodiesel JK, (a mixture of juliflora and kapok was a 50:50 (JK50) ratio as a superior blend) mixed with pure diesel. The filterability, performance, and emission tests were conducted for different test blends (DB0, DB20, DB30, DB40, and DB100) and diesel fuel. The results showed DB20 having good filterability, FBT value of DB20 biodiesel was 1.38, which was in line with ASTM standard (D2068-14) and lower pressure drop among other blends. The experimental outcomes also indicated brake-thermal efficiency (BTE) of DB20 as 2.16% less than diesel, with a 2% increase in brake-specific energy consumption (BSEC) closer to diesel. However, there were decreases in exhaust emissions of DB20, such as Carbon monoxide, Hydrocarbon, and Smoke, at 100% load, which were 17.73%, 5.57%, and 9.58%, respectively, concerning diesel fuel. Besides, NOx emission significantly increased (2.18%) compared to base diesel. The results support that the DB20 mixture holds the potential of alternate fuel for IC engines.
