Abstract

In northern Pakistan, areas proximate to regional faults i.e. Main Mantle Thrust (MMT) and Main Karakoram Thrust (MKT) show high deformation in hard rock masses. Analysis of jointed and highly stressed rock-mass conditions, alongside intact rock physico-mechanical properties, provides insights into their engineering response to stressors. This study aimed to characterize granite in accordance to its physico-mechanical and petrographic properties and assess the impact of stress-induced micro-fabric changes on granite strength. The simple destructive and non-destructive tests, including uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), ultrasonic pulse wave velocity (UPV), and Schmidt hammer rebound (SHR), on retrieved core samples were conducted. Additionally, water absorption and porosity measurements were conducted on each sample to assess the influence of micro-fabric changes on the physical properties. Furthermore, petrographic analysis was carried out to elucidate the texture, mineralogy, and mineral alteration in intact rock. The strong positive correlation between UCS and quartz percentage, as well as the moderate negative correlation with feldspar percentage were found. The investigation of intact rock properties along fault lines and active tectonic zones highlights the influence of textural, mineralogical, and stress-induced changes on granite mechanical behavior. This leads to significantly higher porosity, weathering, and lower UCS values compared to the average values of granitic rocks. These findings have practical implications for geological and engineering assessments, particularly in the context of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), by enhancing understanding of intact rock micro fabric changes.
