One of the most important assets which a company possesses is information, and yet, paradoxically, the organisation of information flows is one of the least developed areas in business operations. Many managers simply do not appreciate the enormous benefits which result from an ordered appraisal of their information needs, combined with an assessment of the sources from which relevant information can be obtained. The linking together of management information needs and sources is the first step in the development of an information system designed to help management make better decisions: there are many companies, however, who have not even specified their own information needs, and this can only lead to a weak and inadequate input to the decision making process.
