Output Feedback Stabilization for Networked Control Systems with Packet Dropouts

The problems of stability and stabilization for the networked control systems (NCS) with stochastic packet dropouts are investigated. When packet dropouts occur between sensor and controller, the networked control system is modeled as a markov jump linear system with two operation modes. Based on this model, the sufficient condition for the stability of the system is presented, then static output feedback controller is obtained in terms of LMIs condition.A number example illustrates the effectiveness of the method in this paper.

Application of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for Prediction of Maritime Safety

In the field of marine, prediction of the marine safety is very important. It is reported that defects exist in the small intestinal epithelial barrier of inflammatory bowel disease, which might be associated with increased intestinal permeability at a very early stage. All endangered large whale species are vulnerable to collisions with large ships; and “ship strikes” are the greatest known threat to one of the world’s rarest whales, the North Atlantic right whale. The magnitude of this threat is likely to increase as maritime commerce expands. Factors influencing the incidence and severity of ship strikes are not well understood, although vessel speed appears to be a strong contributor. The purpose of this study was to characterize the hydrodynamic effects near a moving hull that may cause a whale to be drawn to or repelled from the hull, and to assess the accelerations exerted on a whale at the time of impact. Using scale models of a container ship and a right whale in experimental flow tanks, we assessed hydrodynamic effects and measured accelerations experienced by the whale model in the presence of a moving vessel. Using an artificial neural network (ANN) prediction of the marine safety, results are compared with experimental values and deviations are determined. Based on the implemented investigations, minimal deviations between experimental and predicted values are obtained and can be concluded that ANN can be used for prediction of the marine safety.

Design and Implement of a Modularized NC Program Interpreter

In order to improve the universality and expansibility of the existing CNC (Computer numerical control) interpretation technique, a new model of NC program interpreter is proposed based on the format and characteristics of NC program. This model uses the modularized structure. Because of the independence of module function and the consistency of the interface, each module of the interpreter can be design and expansion independently without affecting other modules. Improve the grammatical rules by using EBNF (Extended Backus-Naur Form), which effectively eliminates the uncertainty of grammatical analysis caused by grammatical ambiguity. The error handling module introduced cannot only detect all kinds of interpretation error automatically, but also pointed out the wrong location directly. A modularized interpreter prototype system which verified the validity of the proposed method was developed. The experimental Results shows that the interpretation time is much less than the program machining time, so the modularized NC program interpreter proposed can improve the interpretation efficiency significantly.

Parallel Computing Strategy Design Based on COC

Sparse and unstructured computations are widely involved in engineering and scientific applications. It means that data arrays could be indexed indirectly through the values of other arrays or non-affine subscripts. Data access pattern would not be known until runtime. So far all the parallel computing strategies for this kind of irregular problem are single network topology oriented, which cannot fully exploit the advantages of modern hierarchical computing architecture, like grid. We proposed a hybrid parallel computing strategy RP, shorted for “Replicated and Partially-shared”, to improve the performance of irregular applications in the COC (Cluster of Clusters) environment.

A Novel Storage Management in Embedded Environment

Flash memory has been widely used in various embedded devices, such as digital cameras and smart cell phones, because it has a fast access speed, a high availability and an economization of power. However, replacing hard drives with flash memory in current systems often either requires major file system changes or causes performance degradation due to the limitations of block based interface and out-of-place updates required by flash. We introduce a management framework of object-based storage system which can optimize the performance for the underlying implementation. Based on this model, we propose a data allocation method that takes richer information from an object-based interface. Using simulation, we show that cleaning overhead can be reduced by up to 11% by separating data and metadata. Segregating the hot data and cold data can further reduce the cleaning overhead by up to 19%.

An Expanding Clustering Algorithm Based on Density Searching

Most clustering algorithms need to preset the initial parameters which affect the performance of clustering very much. To solve this problem, a new method is proposed, which determine the center points of clustering by density-searching according to the universality of the Gaussian distribution. After the center was obtained, the cluster expands based on the correlation coefficient between clusters and the membership of the samples until the terminating condition is met. The experimental results show that this method could classify the samples of Gaussian distribution with different degree of overlap accurately. Compared with the fuzzy c-means algorithm, the proposed method is more accurate and timesaving when applied to the Iris data and Fossil data.

Solving the Aircraft Assigning Problem by the Ant Colony Algorithm

This paper sums the aircraft assigning problem up as vehicle routing problem, and constructs a mixed integer programming model. This model not only considers the link time and link airport between two consecutive flight strings, but also considers the available flying time for each aircraft. To solve this problem, an Ant Colony System (ACS) combining with the pheromone updating strategy of ASRank (Rank-based Version of Ant System) and MMAS (MAX-MIN Ant System) is proposed. Seven groups of initial flight string sets are used to test the method, and the important parameters of the algorithm are analyzed. The numerical results show that the method of this paper can effectively reduce the total link time between the continuous flight strings, and obtain the satisfactory solution with high convergence speed.

Generalization Bounds of Ranking via Query-Level Stability I

The quality of ranking determines the success or failure of information retrieval and the goal of ranking is to learn a real-valued ranking function that induces a ranking or ordering over an instance space. We focus on generalization ability of learning to rank algorithms for information retrieval (IR). The contribution of this paper is to give generalization bounds for such ranking algorithm via uniform (strong and weak) query-level stability by deleting one element from sample set or change one element in sample set. Only we define the corresponding definitions and list all the lemmas we need. All results will show in “Generalization Bounds of Ranking via Query-Level Stability II”.

FEM Analysis of the Jet Flow Characteristic in a Turning Cavity

The jet flow characteristic was analyzed by the finite element method in a turning cavity. Using ANSYS-FLOTRAN CFD software, according to the actual size, building an entity model, the finite element simulation was conducted by a series of procedures, such as meshing, applying loads and solve. Then the flow field distribution was calculated with the different input angular rate. The results are as follow:

(1) In static status, airflow velocity shows a symmetry distribution through the cavity central axis. The maximum velocity of gas flow appears near the cavity central axis. The airflow velocity gradually decreases on the both sides of the cavity central axis, and the velocity is zero near the wall.

(2) In turning status, by the action of the Coriolis force, the centre of jet flow will be deflected. The flow field shows an asymmetry distribution through the cavity central axis. The flow velocity will change with angular rate for the each point. So the piezoelectric fluidic angular rate sensor uses this characteristic sensitized the angular rate.

A Hypothesis Testing Using the Total Time on Test from Censored Data as Test Statistic

The total time on test for censored data from an exponentially distributed population has been proved to be a prediction sufficient (or adequate) statistic by Nair and Cheng [10] in light of the works by Cheng and Mordeson [4], and others [1, 9, 12-14]. The test may be repeated for many times. As a result, since the total time on test until the r-th ordered failure time is observed will be recorded for each test, several total time on test (for censored data) for the same system are available for use in analyzing the reliability of the system. The main objective of this proposal is to create a statistical test for the parameter of the exponential distribution on the basis of the total time on test from censored data.

Adaptive Particle Swarm Optimizers

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a relatively new swarm intelligence-based heuristic global optimization technique. Since PSO is easy to understand and implement, requires little parameter tuning and exhibits robust global convergence, it has become the target of increasing interest from scientific and engineering communities. In Particle Swarm Optimization, each particle moves in the search space and updates its velocity according to best previous positions already found by its neighbors (and itself), trying to find an even better position. This approach has been proved to be powerful but needs parameters predefined by the user, like swarm size, neighborhood size, and some coefficients, and tuning these parameters for a given problem may be, in fact, quite difficult.

Application of Improved Genetic Algorithms in Structural Optimization Design

The genetic algorithms (GAs) are broadly applicable stochastic search and optimization techniques. However, there exists premature convergence phenomenon in some GAs. To overcome the deficiency, two improved genetic algorithms are proposed in this study. The first one is a hybrid algorithm of the genetic algorithm and downhill simplex method, while the second one is the combination of genetic algorithm and conjugate gradient method. Then, the mathematical optimization model of the 10 bar truss is built and both of the improved algorithms are identified by the numerical example and compared with the simple genetic algorithm. The simulation results indicate that the two purposed techniques show stronger robustness in finding feasible optimum designs than the simple genetic algorithm.

The Integration Framework of Train Scheduling and Control Based on Model Predictive Control

The integration of railway signaling and communication realizes the bidirectional information transmission between trains and ground control centers. In order to take full advantage of such information integration, this paper presents the integration architecture of train scheduling and control based on the model predictive control with the hierarchical structure of top (macroscopic), middle (mesoscopic) and bottom (microscopic) levels. The top level realizes the real-time train scheduling, the middle level guarantees trains to run with safety distances and implement the real-time operation plans produced by the top level, and the bottom level accomplishes the energy control and drives the trains to run according to the set-points engendered by the middle level. The proposed hierarchical feedback control can optimize the train operation, shorten the departure interval, improve the railway line density, ensure the safety of railway transportation, and eventually fulfill the Real-time, Automatic, Predictive, Intelligent Scheduling and control for hIgh-Speed Trains (RAPISIST).
