Über dieses Buch

Today, early-stage investors and entrepreneurs find themselves in a dilemma in which they must choose between profit and impact; between traditional, for-profit-only models on the one hand, and multiple-bottom-line structures with a positive social or environmental impact on the other. To help them, and in response to a time in which climate change, exponentially growing technologies, and COVID-19 are calling into question humanity’s priorities, the author proposes a new investment paradigm, namely Integral Investing.

Integral Investing incorporates and transcends the best practices of both traditional venture capital and impact investing. It provides a seamless integration and shows how technological progress need not be our rival, but can instead be our ally in ensuring the prosperous society we all want. Drawing on her own investments and stellar track record in Silicon Valley and Germany over the past 25 years, the author reveals the mechanism of Integral Investing. At the heart of it is a powerful, 360-degree de-risking tool called the Theta Model, which reveals how to make smart investment decisions based on the comprehensive integration of traditional due-diligence criteria, sustainability metrics, and assessments of the founders’ and team culture. But it doesn’t stop there.

In turn, the book demonstrates how to use human-centered AI to scale and digitalize the investment process. The goal here is to accelerate the use of exponential tech, capital, and consciousness leadership to transition to a sustainable global society: a process the author refers to as the Investment Turnaround. The 21 principles of Integral Investing, which she defines using Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory, lead to her manifesto on how to implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals within Planetary Boundaries by 2050 through early-stage investing and entrepreneurship.

Similar to the 15th century, when the Medicis inspired the Renaissance, today humanity is once again at a crucial turning point where pioneering financiers, investors, entrepreneurs, and other committed individuals have the opportunity to leave behind the legacy of a prosperous society. This handbook provides a source of inspiration, and shows how self-actualization, a positive mindset, and a consciousness that is backed by a world-centric desire can become the driving force for solving the global grand challenges.

Chapter 1. The Context of Investing

This chapter presents an analysis of the exterior context in which investing, company building, finance, and economics are currently operating. It brings to the forefront the biggest task of our time, namely solving the tension between: (1) our current economic model that is based on inflation, ongoing growth and debt in order to survive in the short-term at the expense of growing inequality, loss of asset value, and future generations while risking humanity’s existence; (2) exponentially growing technologies that are massively deflationary while creating abundance; and (3) the global grand challenges with massive existential threats. Therefore, I invite you to look at the hidden evolutionary forces operating under the cover in terms of past and future progress and how disruptive technologies, the compounded ingenuity of humanity’s collective evolution, are currently contributing positively to our planet’s health and humanity’s well-being. Whether the context is health, mobility, transportation, the connected world, the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, artificial intelligence, augmented intelligence, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), brain-computer interfaces, or the convergence of them all, I suspect you will consider the result of the analysis to be rather promising. Evolutionary forces have endowed humanity with the necessary resources, technological know-how, innovation, creativity, and massive amounts of capital to create mindboggling technology and evolving mindsets that can conspire to address existential threats.

Chapter 2. Hidden Dimensions and the Search for Meaning

If and how humanity could muster the necessary world-centric levels of consciousness to shift the current mindset to achieve the necessary transformations is the subject of this chapter. While I agree that an individual and institutional mind shift is our secret weapon toward systemic transformation, I opt for a much more differentiated analysis of what that means. Why? Because a simple mind shift from an infantile, and linearly thinking, egocentric mindset to an ethnocentric mindset, à la “make America great again,” is not sufficient, whether it occurs in individuals or in institutions. We need a world-centric shift in mindsets because our problems are global and, like tech, growing exponentially. In this chapter, I dig deeper into the concept of mind shift by highlighting the hidden determinants and patterns of human evolution and share the results of my own 15 years of research that was triggered by my personal experiences. Moreover, I hypothesize that the great mind shift toward world-centric levels of consciousness I saw emerging in my research could represent an encouraging trend. I draw on established models and theories of consciousness evolution by Abraham Maslow, Clare Graves, Susanne Cook-Greuter, and Ken Wilber, among others, to lay the theoretical foundation of Integral Investing. I go deeper into human psychology in an attempt to show the way to personal liberation from scarcity thinking and our dependency on money and material things and use Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey to demonstrate how it is possible to achieve that.

Chapter 3. Integral Investing in the Disruption Era

Drawing on the premise that the best way to predict the future is to create it, in this chapter I explain and illustrate the real-world application of Integral Investing within the exterior context presented in Chap. 1 and the hidden, interior transformation discussed in Chap. 2. I give examples of how we have successfully applied our investing model through the creation of integrally sustainable companies to show how Transformation is Feasible through early-stage investing. In this chapter, you will also learn why 80% of the investment risk lies with the team and key individuals and how to reduce that risk through the Theta Model, our due diligence process that we now scale trough a human-centered AI. Our Integral Investing model is summarized in 21 principles and serves as the manifesto for the Investment Turnaround, our moonshot. This book shows a path to ensure the future of life and gives hope. But it is up to us to step up and become the agents for change in order to initiate the right planetary action on all existential threats, from climate change to unsafe AI to nuclear weapons.
