Abstract

The introductory chapter provides a capsule biography of Gunnar Myrdal’s life, a sketch of his personality—that of an egocentric workaholic—and an outline of the scope of the study, ranging from Myrdal’s doctoral dissertation to the end of his life. It sketches the main steps of his career and accounts for his major works.

No comprehensive biography of Gunnar Myrdal, dealing with both the man and his work, exists. The closest we get to that is Jackson (1990), which, in spite of the fact that it mainly deals with An American Dilemma (Myrdal 1944a), also offers insights about the periods before and after that. The short work of Barber (2008) deals mainly with the intellectual side. Cf. also the biographies of Gunnar and his wife, Alva, listed in note 2, Chapter 3, where the emphasis is more on the personal side. Here, I have mainly drawn on Gustafsson (1987–1989), Jackson (1990), Swedberg (1990), and Barber (2008).
