4. Types of Heating System
Abstract
The reasons for providing heating systems in buildings are threefold:
  • to provide ideal thermal comfort conditions under which the occupants can live and work in a safe and efficient manner;
  • to ensure that the products being used, stored or manufactured in the space are protected from the cold and damp;
  • to protect the building fabric from the effects of cold weather.
The aim of this chapter is to introduce the various controllable factors relating to thermal comfort, the well-being of the occupants within the space, and the associated heating plant required to maintain the chosen design conditions.

8. Services Access, Lifts and Escalators, Fire-Fighting Equipment, External Access to Buildings, Services Costs
Abstract
The function of a building is the usual key to the amount of electrical, mechanical, and sanitary services required: contrast the needs of, say, a hospital with a dwelling. For the dwelling, the proportion of overall construction cost attributable to the installation of services will be much smaller than far of the hospital, which could amount to as much as 50–60 per cent.
