Abstract

Permanent magnet (PM) linear machine generates linear motions directly without rotation-to-translation conversion mechanisms, which significantly simplifies system structure, and improves system working efficiency, dynamic response and control performance. In this chapter, the history of linear machines are briefly introduced. Then the fundamental concepts, advantages, and applications of linear machines are presented. Subsequently, typical magnet arrays in conventional linear machines are discussed. Following that, the research objective and scope of the tubular linear machine with dual Halbach array is proposed. Finally, the outline of this monograph is presented.
