Abstract
Humankind’s economic activities have been rapidly growing ever since the Industrial Revolution. The limits of the earth’s resources have long since been recognized and the crisis of sustainability clearly pointed out. Climate change is now manifesting itself, causing severe natural disasters, while the drive for economic growth is intensifying under global capitalism. Can we avoid a catastrophe of the environment? Can the economy continue to grow? What will happen in our future?
Though the relationship between economy and the environment has been studied and discussed in various ways, we are still looking for the answer to these questions. This book seeks a new perspective on this issue by exploring a unique approach based on evolutionary and institutional economics, as well as by analyzing the issue both theoretically and empirically.
Behind this approach is a belief that the relationship between economy and the environment cannot be adequately understood through the logic of either one of them: their interaction needs to be understood as a coevolving process.
