Abstract

After the motivation and benefits of this book for the development of intercultural user interfaces (IUID) are explained, what is meant by IUID and its goal and procedure are further explained. In addition, the target group and structure of this book are described.

Formulation by Udo Kunder (Global Sales Manager and certified CPUX-F Usability Profes- sional).

2
Since 2000, sales figures for automobiles, for example, have risen steadily, especially in China, and in 2008 overtook those in the USA.

3
With the use of words used here in this book, any other possible and desired form and address of the reader (e.g., female) is also automatically meant.

Information architecture includes, for example, information presentation, which is expressed, for example, by information frequency and information speed, or information structure such as information arrangement, information parallelism, and layout. Interaction behavior is described by parameters such as interaction speed and interaction frequency or by orientation during interaction (“navigation”).

IUID is often simply called “Intercultural User Interface Design”. “Design” is understood here in the sense of the entire development process, i.e., “design” in the sense of “development” or “process of human-centered design” as opposed to “design” as one of the more phases of the development process. The correct expression, according to that, would be “Intercultural User Interface Development”. However, the term “User Interface Design” is so strongly Germanized that “Intercultural User Interface Design” was initially chosen as the title for the German-speaking market. With the second edition of the German book after its translation into English and the associated clarification of terms, an adaptation of the title of the second version of the German book may take place. For the English edition of the book the title “Intercultural User Interface Design” is just right, because in English it means the entire process of intercultural user interface development and not just the design phase.

This enumeration reflects the correct approach to the development of intercultural user interfaces, while the sequence of chapters represents the infrastructural prioritization of the areas. This means that before intercultural usability engineering (IUE) (Chap. 4) can be carried out in the development of intercultural user interfaces (IUID) (Chap. 5), software engineering (SE) must already have become intercultural software engineering (ISE) (Chap. 3) being aware of its corresponding tasks.
